What to ask a NYC 3D printing service

Which processes do you run yourself?

  • A list of processes does not tell you which machines a shop owns. Ask which run on its own floor and which go to a partner, since that changes who you call when something goes wrong.

How big can you print in one piece?

  • Ask for the build size in inches, and how the shop splits and joins anything bigger. A seam on a display prop may be fine; on a part that takes load it may not be.

How do I get a price?

  • Some shops price a file online in seconds. Others reply by email after reviewing it, which can take a day or more. If you are comparing shops, send each one the same file.

Who checks my file?

  • Ask whether someone looks at wall thickness, orientation and tolerances before printing, and whether the shop can repair or redesign a file that will not print.

Pickup, delivery or shipping?

  • Some NYC shops work by appointment only. Ask about pickup hours, courier delivery and how fragile parts are packed.

What happens on a reorder?

  • For production parts, ask whether reorders run on the same machines and material, and what inspection paperwork comes with each batch.
